Okay. As you may already know from my Black Forest photo essay, yesterday I took a day off and headed into the Black Forest. My primary goal was to find a killer view of either Freiburg or the surrounding mountains, so every time we came to a fork in the trail, I chose the steepest upward path, taking us as straight up the mountain as I could manage.
What I figured would be a four or five hour hike actually (accidentally) turned into an eight hour excursion. The bad news about that is exhaustion and also blisters. The good news is that spending eight hours wandering through the Black Forest has some majorly gorgeous rewards. Like…
(At hour two.)
Or this:
(At hour six.)
Or this:
(Also at hour six. And, yes, that is a pancake with mushrooms and cream sauce at an outdoor cafe just off the trail. I win.)

Hiking to locations that have food and water is always the best choice. ;)
Haha, so true. I saw the little food sign on the trail markers and veered madly toward it. :)
Wow, you really are in our backyard. From the picture down into Freiburg, you were trying to climb Schauinsland?
@Andrew, quite possibly! We’re currently staying in Freiburg, so I just entered the forest off Gunterstalstrasse (near Hans-Thoma-Strasse) and started climbing, hoping for a view. Eventually, I started purposefully following signs for St. Valentin (which is where we ate at hour 6 or so) and then made my way from there back down to Freiburg.
We’re in town for another couple days and would love to meet some fellow bloggers if you are up for a schnitzel!
