Organic farmers market, Interlaken

It took me a long time to find the farmers market in Interlaken.

Hidden away in a square off the main street with no information online, for the longest time I just assumed that Interlaken was one of the few places in Europe I’d been that didn’t have a farmers market – until a local friend invited me to go with her for some organic produce on a Saturday morning and I discovered that this tiny, only-known-to-locals market runs every single week. I’d just been missing out.

Expect seasonal organic produce (as well as eggs, yogurt, jams, and cheese) and high prices (it is Switzerland, after all). In the winter, there’s one large stall with a surprisingly good selection and in summer (if I’m recalling correctly) there were several stalls. The market isn’t usually crowded, but expect to wait in short lines behind locals in the know.

What (else) to do in Interlaken

Visit the castle ruins along the shores of Lake Thun (or the Unspunnen castle ruin in Wilderswil). Treat yourself to a very luxe spa day at Victoria Jungfrau (and perhaps have lunch there; the cafe is reasonably good). And definitely indulge in a piece of cake at Velo Cafe.

Or make your way to nearby Lauterbrunnen for incredible hiking for all fitness levels. For something easy and beautiful, take the valley floor path from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg. There are 72 waterfalls along the valley and you can detour over to one of the most famous (Trümmelbach) if you’re intrigued. For more difficult hiking, take the trail from Lauterbrunnen to Mürren or hike to Kleine Scheidegg.
