Markthalle Zürich: a food market in an old viaduct
Heading to Zürich and looking for a worthwhile food market? Markthalle im Viadukt is what you’re after.
Located in an old viaduct (which now plays host to shops and restaurants under the old arches), the markthalle is a sweeping space full of dozens of food vendors selling everything from savory single-serving meat pies to firetruck red tomatoes to local brews. It’s indoors and year-round and rather lively at lunchtime with locals chatting across tables over fish dishes and wine.
How to get to Markthalle Zürich
The market is located in an old viaduct (viadukt in German) about 15 minutes from the center by tram. Here’s the address. The viadukt is also home to a variety of shops and restaurants, so it’s worth taking some extra time to explore and shop if that’s something you enjoy.
When to go
The market is open 9 a.m. to midnight Tuesday to Saturday. It closes at 11 p.m. on Monday and is closed all day Sunday.
What to expect
Fresh produce, cheeses, meats, savory pies, baked goods, fish and seafood, honey, nuts, takeaway food, dried fruit, spices, teas, cooking supplies.
Language
German is the official language in this canton (region), but you’ll find plenty of English here as well.
What (else) to do in Zürich
If you feel like doing some shopping, step outside the Markthalle and walk along the viaduct, which is full of interesting shops and restaurants. Old town, as you might expect, is very pretty. And you’ll find the locals clustered along the lakeside on a sunny day.
And, of course, locals always have an inside track on what to do in the city.
