Packing for Europe, Part I

by gigigriffis

Airplane, Belize

Wondering what a newly minted nomad packs for a European trip of unknown duration–a trip that will involve staying put for a month or so at a time, working fairly normal hours from the road, and taking care of a small, delightful puppy the whole time?

Obviously I am packing very differently this time. My last trip to Europe was just the essentials, plus the nice dress and bike lock I always pack. This time, I’m going for so much longer and doing so much more, so the list involves…

The Basics
2 pairs of jeans
1 black pencil skirt
4 tank tops
1 t-shirt
2 jackets/hoodies
1 swimsuit
1 pair sneakers
1 pair sandals
1 pair nice shoes
1 lightweight scarf
1 pair pajamas
A small pouch of inexpensive jewelry
1 hat w/brim

Documents & Moolah
Passport & 1 copy of passport
Credit & debit cards
Dog import paperwork, rabies certificate, and emails from various ferry companies/airlines about their dog travel regulations

Portable monitor (LOVE THIS)
Camera card reader
Extra battery
iPod charger
Converter plugs
Mini alarm clock
Small notebook & pens
USB & adaptors
1 content strategy book
1 flash drive
Business cards

Basic makeup kit (mascara, foundation, blusher, brushes, chapstick, tweezers, nail clippers)
Small bottles of lotion, soap, shampoo/conditioner combo
Hand sanitizer
Small packet band-aids
Toothpaste & toothbrush (& floss)
Hair clay
Hairbrush & a couple hair ties
Small towel

Puppy Stuff
1 bag of dog food (enough to last the flight and layovers)
Leash & harness
1 baggie treats
1 tug toy & 1 small stuffed toy
Carrier & pee pads for carrier
Small bottle cleaner (in case of accidents after long flights)
Baby wipes & small bottle of dog shampoo (for her allergies)
Heartworm pills
Thunder shirt

Fun & Games
3 paperback books
Corkscrew (doubles as a jar opener)

1 thin blanket
2 tupperware containers (triple as: dog food bowls, food storage, and fragile stuff storage)
2 clothes pins (for hanging laundry, closing chip containers, etc.)
Small umbrella

I also plan on buying (or otherwise acquiring) a few things when I get to my first destination, including:
City map
Curling iron

[Stay tuned tomorrow for a discourse on how I pack.]
