[UPDATE: Thanks everyone who applied! I’ve selected my first round of betas. If you still want to read for me, I will likely be doing at least one more round, so please feel free to fill out the form and I may get in touch later to ask if you’ll read.]
First, some exciting news:
I’ve finished my manuscript!
That adventurous, historical, pirate-filled novel I’ve been working on for about a year is finally ready for its first readers.
I’m so excited to share it with you.
Which means the next step is finding my first readers.
And this, my friends, is where you come in! (If this sounds fun to you.)
I need a handful of readers willing to read the book in the next three weeks and give me honest feedback. You don’t need to be a writer and you don’t need any experience. You just need to be willing to read and answer some questions honestly. And your feedback will be a huge part of me figuring out what else I need to do to get this book ready for literary agents.
If reading the manuscript and giving your honest feedback on characters, scenes, and all that jazz sounds like a blast to you, I’d love to hear from you.
Here’s the back-of-the-book teaser:
Jeanne de Clisson is out for revenge.
At forty-two, her perfect life—a loving husband, three boisterous kids, and two castles in the French countryside—shatters when Phillip VI, the King of France, arrests and beheads her husband for treachery.
There’s no evidence and no trial—only the execution.
The nobles are shocked. The paranoid king is relieved. And Jeanne…
Jeanne wants the king’s head on a pike.
To get justice, she’ll have to sell her castles, learn to captain a pirate fleet, and risk everything—including her life and the only family she has left.
Based on the true story of notorious female pirate Jeanne de Clisson, BURN IT TO THE GROUND is a historical thriller set in the 1300s in France and England.
You might like it if:
:: You loved the series And I Darken
:: You’re a fan of Rejected Princesses
:: You think Game of Thrones would be even cooler if it was based on a true story and centered around powerful women
:: You crave more books with powerful lady leads and strong female friendships
:: Smashing the patriarchy sounds fun
Expect violence (she was a Medieval pirate, after all) but no gore and a tiny bit of passion (before the king kills her husband) but no open-door/graphic sex scenes.
Intrigued? I’m looking for a few more beta readers who are:
:: Avid readers
Read at least a dozen books a year? I’m looking for you.
:: Lovers of thrillers/page-turners
You can like lots of genres, but my ideal readers are people who like their books with a little adventure.
:: Willing to read the whole book between August 15 (when I’ll send you a copy) and September 5 (when all feedback will be due)
If you end up not liking it, you don’t have to read the whole thing. But I’d like to get people on board who are planning on reading the whole novel. And if you do put it down? All I ask is that you indicate where and why it lost your attention and that you get back to me before September 5.
(If these dates don’t work, but you’d love to read, go ahead and fill out the form below and just check “no” on the date question. I plan on having 2 – 3 batches of readers on this and may need more people in those sub-sequent batches. If you’re a good fit, I may reach out later.)
:: Willing to be honest and also kind
I’ll give you some specific questions to answer and I want your honest opinions. No need to sugar coat things for me. But do, of course, be kind. “This whole book sucks,” isn’t helpful. “I was confused about x scene because of y” is!
:: A diverse group
Because my characters have wildly different backgrounds (some I share and some I don’t), I think it’s important to have readers who do, too.
In the questionnaire, I’ll ask if you’re willing to share gender, race, neurodiversity, etc. You absolutely don’t have to. You can totally skip the question. But if you are willing to share with me, it’ll help me make sure that I’ve got opinions coming in from lots of different backgrounds and perspectives, which can only make the book better.
:: Willing to give detailed feedback.
The more detail you can give on what did or didn’t work for you, how the book made you feel, etc., the more it’ll help!
Still with me? Jazzed about being a reader? Fill out this quick form and I’ll be in touch!
I’ve already got enough people for my first round, but may be doing more rounds, so please feel free to apply and I’ll get in touch if I need you!
