[Update: this offer has expired. Thanks to everyone who joined me! You can still purchase the DIY Website Workshop at normal prices here.]

Oh, hey there, web friends!

I’ve got some big news today.

As you may already know, last year I created a seven-week course designed to take non-techy folks through the process of building their own website. The idea was that if you don’t have the money to hire a pro to do your website, perhaps you instead have the time. (After all, everything costs something: money or time.)

And so I developed a seven-week course of videos and worksheets and step-by-step instructions designed to take you through strategy, content (words and images for your site), choosing and customizing a WordPress theme (design), and launch. No tech experience or savvy required.

Here’s how I’ve been selling it:

So, now, the big news: for the rest of June, I’ve decided to offer the program for free. All I’m asking for is some feedback when you’re finished.

You get a new website in seven weeks; I get some ideas about what questions you run into along the way and how I can improve the course. Win, win.

You’ll also be invited to a private Facebook group where you and others taking the course can help each other out, ask each other for opinions, etc. etc.

If that sounds great, you can sign up here.

If you’d like to know more, you can find all sorts of FAQs, testimonials, and additional info over here. And you’re welcome to drop questions in the comments.

Would love to have your feedback and hope this limited time freebie results in lots of beautiful, smart new business, creative, and blog sites out in the world!

Trying to sign up for the workshop. I tried doing a blog a couple of years ago, and it was a mess. HELP!

Hi GiGi! I’m excited for this opportunity. Redoing my website has been on my list for quite some time! Thank you for offering this.

So, if I currently pay for a domain, and have a website through WordPress, will you teach us how to transition to a new version (or a new platform?) if need be? Will I still use WordPress? Will there be other costs, or is it just a matter of changing how things appear on the front end?

Happy to email you, too ;) Thanks!

In the course, I recommend WordPress.org and NameCheap hosting, but you can certainly also do most of the course even if you’re working with another platform. The course is designed as if you’re starting a site from scratch, but you can pick and choose if there are bits that don’t apply and while I don’t have a specific video for transferring your old website content into a new platform (e.g. if you are going from WordPress.com to WordPress.org), that’s super simple to do and I can point you toward resources (and you’d probably find easy instructions just by Googling as well). If you’re already on WordPress.org, you can just make all the changes directly in WordPress.

Cool! Thanks, Gigi. I’m already using WordPress.org so, hopefully, I’ll be able to make any changes from my current dashboard. Looking forward to learning from you!

Hello Gigi, I bumped into your kind offer and sounds great!

I have a small question, though, please: I am a part-time freelance journalist and I have a personal blog to collect my articles and my travel stories. For the moment it’s more a personal “diary” than a professional tool.

But I’d love to eventually transition to full time writing and I wonder if

    1) I need my website OR
    2) I need to “turn” my blog into a more professional one.

Thank you for your time and advice :)

    Best,
    Francesca

      Hi Francesca,

It’s hard to answer without knowing a bit more about your site and goals. The workshop’s first week is all about strategy and getting clear on what you’re doing, what your goals are, etc. So that may help you get some clarity around how you want to proceed!

I think the question of whether to have a separate business site or incorporate it into your existing blog is mostly a question of whether you’ll have the same goals or different goals for each site (so something you could think about during the strategy session) and whether you’d have the same or different audiences for each site. So I think during week one, maybe fill out the strategy questionnaire twice – once for your personal blog and once for your business site and then ask yourself whether the audience and goals overlap enough to keep them together or whether they feel incompatible goal and audience-wise.
