Markethalle im Viadukt: Zurich’s Yummy Indoor Market

by Gigi Griffis

If you only have a couple days in a new place, what do you do? How do you spend your limited time? What attractions top your must-see list?

For me, the answer is often markets! If I’m Rennes, France, for the day, I’m going to Marche de Lices. If I’m in Paris, I’m seeking out my local fresh market. If I’m in Bern, I’m going to see the cheese guy at their weekly market.

So, when we went up to Zurich for a couple days, it won’t surprise you to learn that I circled back to one of their interesting markets: Markthalle im Viadukt.

The Viadukt is actually an old Roman viaduct that’s been converted into a series of shops and restaurants, including the big market hall. It’s indoors and runs year-round and you’ll find everything from little eateries (like the savory pie shop where we grabbed our lunch) to walls of spices, pestos, and treats.

What you’ll find: fish, meats, breads, cheeses, pestos, pastas, pies, jarred goods, soap, vegetables, fruits, smoothies, etc.

To get there: It’s less than 15 minutes from the center by tram. Here’s the Google Maps listing.

When to go: Any day except Sunday. (Check online for current hours.)

Language: German, but most vendors speak very good English.

I loved Zurich the few days I was there for work. I’m huge soccer fan and to be able to tour the FIFA museum was really cool.

Monday Morning . January 14

Gigi,
Interesting. You ask what would be on my list if I had just a couple of days to be in an area. Rather than hit the big attractions, I would prefer to walk the streets and sample a treat. I would ask a local, “If you were eating lunch out today, where would you go?” Bruce and I like talking to the local people or other tourists.
Markets? I love the crust of the breads. I need a nice helping of butter, too. I know it is wasteful, but I take out the inner soft part and discard it. In a way, it’s a small attempt at weight control.
Here in Colorado . . . squirrels frolic in the cottonwood trees. I wish I could scurry like that. Judy
