Before I landed in the hospital, my goal for my time on Gozo (the prettier, more rural island north of Malta) was to walk as much of its coastline as possible. On an island of just 26 square miles, I thought it might be possible to walk around the whole thing, one piece at a time over the five or so days that I had.
Of course, getting sick put an end to those plans pretty quickly. But not before I’d taken a couple really pretty strolls, like the one below, which started in Sannat, took me past the cliffs at Ta Cenc (pronounced tah chench), passed through the stretch of coastline where Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie had just finished filming their latest movie, and wound its way along the coast to the harbor where the ferry comes over from Malta.
This photo essay is the story of that walk.

What a surprise to see the cacti! Sending rapid healing your way.
Thanks!
And yes – cacti are everywhere there! Prickly pear is a big thing on the islands – you can get jam, liquor, etc. It was surprising and interesting.
I thought the same thing: “Hey! A cactus!” :)
Gorgeous pics!
Thanks. I’m pretty happy with how my new camera is performing.
Wow great pictures! Do you have plans to go back so you can do your walk around the island? I know getting sick put a kaibash on that.
You made me homesick for the desert southwest in the US. Wow very cool that cactus are everywhere.
I don’t think so. I got to do the two walks that intrigued me most (and another that is really popular, though it wasn’t my personal favorite). I may change my mind (I might be biased against a return at the moment just because of how sick I’ve been), but I don’t often return to places once I’ve been. There are too many new places to explore.
Lol – a cactus with berries was new to me! What does it taste like, I wonder?
The prickly pear jam tastes very sickly sweet (I didn’t like it at all), but the prickly pear liquor was nicer. It tastes very floral, almost like a rose smells.
Magnificent. And it’s great that you at least got to walk some of the island.
Is the prickly pear poisonous? We have it in Australia and the spikes can be really dangerous.
I have no idea about the spikes. I just know they make jams and liquors from the fruit itself, so that must be okay.
[…] But I can tell you that the house is beautiful, the location is just a short walk away from the prettiest coastal walking paths on Gozo, and the host is incredibly kind. He’s the one who drove me back and forth to the […]
