Here There Be Dragons

by Gigi Griffis

Runners this way

After a few days of resting (read: hobbling) from our accidental 8-hour hike, Luna and I returned to the Black Forest for some more stunning scenery. This time, instead of climbing relentlessly, I decided to take the low roads for a more leisurely stroll (read: one that didn’t make me want to cry at hour seven).

We started by entering the Black Forest at Günterstalstraße near Hans-Thoma-Straße and veering left up the hill. Then I chose the widest, easiest looking way every time the path forked.

And very soon, we stumbled upon a curious wooden owl.

And an alligator sign pointing down the path in front of us.

These were cute, but the hike got even better about ten seconds later when I saw something peering at me through the trees…

And it totally turned out to be a giant dragon made out of old trees (complete with moss!).

(But don’t worry. We’re safe, because it is chained to the ground by its fangs…see?)

Did I mention that I love the Black Forest? Because where else would you stumble upon a dragon? See? Freiburg is awesome. You should go.

That is too cool! I love how the artistic creation just blends into the natural setting. You almost would believe it to be a real dragon in the Black Forest.

Me too! When I first saw it, I did a double take. I was absolutely delighted.
