The Farmářské Trhy na Kulaťáku Farmers Market in Prague

by Gigi Griffis

If you’re headed to Prague, you’ll find more than a few fresh markets scattered around the city. There’s the popular one south of old town (which I recommend skipping; it’s a tourist trap and far less impressive than its local counterparts). There’s Jirak to the east.

And then there’s this lovely, lively market to the north.

What you’ll find: fresh seasonal produce, honey, nuts, cheeses, meats, fish, bread, pastries, herbs, dried fruits, plants, whole chickens, duck, turkey, coffee, food trucks.

To get there: Take the tram or walk to Prague 6 and make your way to this park.

When to go: Saturday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. In general, the earlier you go, the less crowded it’ll be.

Language: Czech! Some vendors will speak English and pretty much all will have calculators (so they can show you the total if they don’t speak English).

We will be in Prague for the month of September. What I really want at a Farmer’s Market is a real, authentic, home grown tomato like I used to get from our garden. Finally, I bought some at a market in Palisade, Colorado, when we were there for their peach festival. They were better than candy. Can I find that kind of tomato in Prague?

I don’t remember seeing any at this market, but I did buy some heirloom tomatoes – the kind that range in color, size, and shape, and taste so much fresher than store-bought – at the Jirak Farmers Market.

I do have that market in my notes because you spoke of it earlier. Judy

Great. Both markets are lovely, but Jirak definitely had the heirlooms at least once. This one had a lot more meat options for those seeking fresh meat.
