The New, Improved, Fabulous Booklist

Posted by gigigriffis under books

Quite a long time ago, I created a list of 100 books that I wanted to read. This list included banned books, genres I had never touched, classics I was ashamed to know nothing about, friend recommendations and bestsellers. Not all of them have been read yet, but I have so many new books on my list, I decided to revamp it.

First let me offer up a few things I learned from the first 60 or so that I read: 1) Banned books are frequently very mild in actuality; 2) Harlequin romances are hilarious; 3) Bestsellers tend to be overrated (with some exceptions); and 4) I’m not sure why some classics are considered classic. What’s the requirement anyway?

Having said all that. Here’s a link to the old list and here is the New List:

(Already read in bold, Already own in italics)

  1. Atonement (quote)
  2. Nothing (Henry Green)
  3. Three Cups of Tea [02/02: good story, boring writing]
  4. King Solomon’s Mines
  5. Just So Stories
  6. The Golden Compass [09/14]

  1. Roommate #1 Said,

I didn’t love Grapes of Wrath, particularly because it portrays the Arizona portion of Route 66 in a less-than-favorable light, but I’m very excited for you to read Ender’s Game, which I just finished tonight, bringing my total number of books completed since moving to Chicago (in June) up to 22. I believe that’s more books than I have read in the previous 25 years combined. This is the influence you have had on me.

  2. Gigi Said,

If by me you mean Chicago and your really nice apartment, which is very conducive to curling up with books, and me then I concur. :)

  3. Roommate #1 Said,

Okay, so I’m lonely and bored. Rub it in, why don’t you? My point is that if it hadn’t been for YOU, I’d be doing more destructive things with my free time. Binge-eating cookies comes to mind.

  4. Brief Roommate Said,

Oh man, I totally second Ender’s Game. It is both SciFi AND was 9th grade required reading, both of which are normally kind of dealbreakers for me, but I loved it. Grapes of Wrath will kill your soul for like a week but it will be worth it. Steinbeck is so effing beautiful.

BOOK EXCHANGE WOOOO, wish Roommate #1 was coming, it sounds like she could contribute some lovely additions;-)
