A Year of Beautiful Spaces: Camping Jungfrau Holiday Park

by Gigi Griffis

The first time I came to the Lauterbrunnen Valley, I booked a small, simple cabin where my best friend and I could wake up every morning and stare out at the famed Stabbauch Falls. I chose the cabin based on price and proximity to the waterfall…but when we arrived, I found (to my delight) that it was not only located under the waterfall, but it was also one of the most lovely campgrounds I’d ever been to. In fact, I think it’s safe to say that it is the loveliest. Bar none.

And, so, when I decided to spend my vacation in the Lauterbrunnen Valley again this year, I again chose Camping Jungfrau Holiday Park.

This time, because their cabins are (sadly) not dog-friendly, Luna and I booked a tent pitch for the month and called a cozy two-man tent our temporary home.

And so the year of beautiful spaces continued with a charming, flower-covered, river-flanking campground with a shared kitchen, laundry facilities, cozy cabins, and an on-site convenience store and restaurant.

Oh, yeah, all with that view of the town’s most famous waterfall and an entrance that leads directly onto a walking path that wends beautifully through the valley.

Camping Jungfrau Holiday Park is located in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland, just a 20-minute train ride from Interlaken and a short hike away from Murren, Wengen, and several UNESCO hiking trails. The valley is known for its 70+ waterfalls, including Trummelbach, which winds through caves in the cliffs, and its extreme sports – everything from endurance hiking to mountain biking to paragliding to base jumping.

The campground offers tent pitches, RV/camper hookups, simple, cozy cabins, and dorm-style accommodations and has on-site kitchen, laundry, dryer room, dishwashing, lounge, internet, restaurant, and convenience store facilities. Everything is always perfectly clean and well-kept, and tends to be much more affordable than the other accommodations in the valley.

But the best part? The wonderful people who work here.

When my tent sprung several leaks during a series of rainstorms, they loaned me a tarp to put over the tent, helped me put the tarp up in the rain, and then put me up in an empty cabin for the night while my tent dried out, even though they normally don’t allow dogs in the cabins. I can’t tell you how grateful I was for their kindness.

Planning your own adventures in the wild, wonderful Lauterbrunnen Valley? Book early. Camping Jungfrau fills up quick (and with good reason).

[…] Camping Jungfrau Holiday Park allows dogs to camp with you (though sadly does not allow dogs in the cabins or dorms). Tent pitches start at 30 Swiss Francs per night including the 3 Franc dog fee. […]

Wonderful. Never went camping in Europe. Wondering how different it is compared to the US. One day…. It’s on the list…. :)
