The Black Forest, so named for its thick growth of conifers, which apparently block out the sun, is a really pretty place, people. Like, really pretty. Like, you should book a vacation there tomorrow. Just sayin’.

You are pretty close to here, now… we are just a hop south of Constance in Switzerland! Glad you are liking the area.
Let me know if you come closer – my Cocker Spaniel likes new pals… :)

Ah, we’re going to be in Switzerland later this month (but I think the closest we’ll get to Lake Constance is Basel, so still a little ways?).

I visited the Black Forest when I was a kid. I remember it seemed like the sort of setting where a gnome could pop out at any moment. It’s very fairytale.

Very pretty. That is in our backyard, and we almost never go wandering in it. Looks like you had a beautiful day.

@Suzy – Yeah. My friend told me that when she used to come to the Black Forest as a child, her family would tell her the tendrils of mist rising above the tree line were steam from the stewpots of the forest rabbits. Very fairy-tale-y and cute.

@Andrew – Thanks! It was beautiful (and exhausting)!

I missed seeing the Black Forest when I was in Germany (besides driving through the fringes, not the same). I desperately want to go back and hike it though!

@Lindsey – Yeah, it’s definitely worth coming back for. I was here for two weeks and I still feel like there was so much to see that I missed!

Fantastic photos Gigi! Looks so lush there. Did you go to the Baden-Baden area while in the region? I heard that they are the part to get into the natural hot springs!

One Traveler’s Favorite Walks Around the World | The Ramble January 4, 2017 - 3:01 am

[…] Ominous and mystical and eerie and wonderful, the Black Forest paths I walked as they branched out from Freiburg were some of my all-time favorites. It’s the type of place you’d expect a fairy or a troll to come lumbering around a corner and catch you by surprise. More than once, I felt a ghostly chill as I walked through the dim pathways. […]
